Fine Ideals: Body Positivity vs. Body Neutrality

By sisterfitdev | June 1, 2022

Words by Hollay Ghadery There’s this picture of me I posted on Instagram: I’m wearing high-waisted jeans and a blue and red houndstooth cardigan tied in a tight knot over my belly button. The bottom of the picture cuts off mid-thigh, the top, around my shoulders, so you can’t see my face. I took this…

“In other parts of the world physical activity i “In other parts of the world physical activity is linked to spirituality and culture.

In Thailand, Muay Thai – their national sport and also the deadly martial art – is seen as a spiritual and religious practice for Thai people.

In Korea, Taekwondo is a very important part of the heritage as well as a form of cultural and spiritual preservation, much like the importance of Kung-Fu in Chinese culture.

It’s quite common for these practitioners to pray in their dojos, which are essentially cultural gyms.”

Sister Fit was excited to support the Run for Pale Sister Fit was excited to support the Run for Palestine event this year…

We were contacted to provide fitness support for participants of the run.

Coach Tai Salih provided a video with prep tips for the run, and would be providing a live warm up session on the day of the run.

We were told the video was problematic because of the mention of LGBTQ + people at the end.

We were also asked to provide a brief blurb about our organization.

We were told by organizers that mentioning that our services include serving the LGBTQ+ community was a concern.

We believe in humanitarian causes and helping those who have suffered oppression.

But when we are told that our existence as an organization would disturb some people…

That it would be better if we edited our identity to make other people more comfortable…

That our brand identity that includes serving LGBTQ+ people would be best kept unsaid to keep the peace (whatever that means)…

We can no longer provide our labour, expertise, and support to organizations where we are not permitted to simply exist.

LGBTQ+ people have always been treated like pollution - especially in the Middle East and in Muslim communities.

This discriminatory attitude has been able to survive for so long because people are afraid to address it.

When you have faced oppression, it is even more imperative that you are vigilant about your own actions and how they oppress others.

We do not have the right to oppress someone else without repercussions.

We remain committed to advocating for the rights of those who are oppressed and will continue to ally ourselves with organizations that share an inclusive vision.
