Muay Thai is a very practical and lethal martial art that originated in Thailand. It has evolved into a growing combat sport. Muay Thai is a stand-up fighting sport that allows for punches, elbows, knees and kicks. Sweeping and “dumping” your opponent is also permitted. Muay Thai is an excellent way to learn stand-up self-defense and enhance one’s self and spiritual awareness.
Like Muay Thai, arnis was originally developed as a form of self-defense. Arnis originated in the Philippines with varying opinions about the exact root. Farmers used to use their bladed grass cutting tool called a “bolo” to defend themselves against Spanish invaders and other intruders who committed genocide on the islands. Today, arnis has evolved into the national sport of the Philippines and is predominantly taught first with rattan sticks. The stick is said to be an extension of the hand. There are many different schools of arnis. The lineage that is taught at Sister Fit comes from Grandmaster Benjamin Luna Lema, founder of LESKAS/LSAI and Grandmaster Mang Fil V. Buena, founder of Buena Mano self-defense systems.
